Here are the Questions:

1. What New Years resolution could you make that you know would break in less than a week.

Since I don’t make any I can’t break them. I am enjoying things just the way they are. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it!

2. How many of the lyrics of Auld Lang Syne do you actually know?

I probably can sing the first verse and the chorus however my grandson L would prefer if I just hummed along.

3. How much should a babysitter be paid for working New Years Eve?

I was paid $50 to work New Year’s Eve back about 1968.

4. What are you most looking forward to in 2013?

This is a big year for us. D H and I celebrate 40 years of “wedded bliss”". During the Christmas holidays the children planned a party for us. We are also going on 3 cruises and yesterday our friend’s surprised us and will join us for 2 of the cruises.

And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!

My 5th question is:

What was the most important event in 2012 that you want to remember?

SUNDAY IN THE CITY–WINTER’S ARRIVAL

I showed you mine, now show me yours.

Share your city/town/suburb/you name it! Think of this as a photography carnival or photography meme (with or without words) that not only lets you share your part of the world, but lets you visit other parts of the world virtually.

Let’s travel the world together!

This week’s statements:

1. without fail, whenever I fly I have to rush through the airport and get held up.

2. I used to be a teacher however having children of my own changed that profession.

3. When I watch tv I get a lot of knitting and crocheting done.

4. My greatest fear is losing someone close to me. I worry about my hubby as well as my children and grandchildren. My parents are also of an age.

THRIVING THURSDAY–PONDERING WITH PURPOSE

I am joining Brenda to ponder Resolutions:

Do you make new years resolutions? And if so, do you keep them?

Resolutions are something that I have never really bothered with. I told the doctor that I am healthy at my current weight and all the dieting in the world will never make me thin. I am a short round person and I intend to stay that way.

I have always tried to see live life with laughter and to take the time to smell the roses. If I were to make a resolution at all it would be to spend more time with my family however with such a growing family with diversified interests that isn’t easy. Keeping in touch is about the closest we come.

D H is the most important person in my world and he is my rock. We try to keep each other happy and healthy.

I have always lived by the Motto

“Don’t go to bed mad!”

So I am not mad and I am going to bed.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!

PONDERING WITH A PURPOSE

Pondering with a Purpose - Overcoming Loss

Welcome to Pondering with a Purpose -

Photobucket

Thank you Brenda for hosting “Pondering with a purpose”. You certainly make us think!

Today the topic is Overcoming Loss!

I fear the Loss of Memory more than anything else. My dad suffers from Alzheimer’s and many of his family have succumbed to this dreadful disease. As a daughter watching from the sidelines it is difficult to see the changes in my Dad. We are very fortunate that he still has a sense of humour. The sad thing about this disease is that he can live in the past however he has no future. My Dad can’t keep up with all of the changes in the family.

It is amazing however that he can remember everyone in his first class picture taken nearly 75 years ago. He still speaks many different languages (mostly bad words). He will ask us the same questions over and over because he can’t remember the answers. As the world changes my Dad gets left behind.

We do our best to keep him informed with lots of pictures which he devours. We try to see him as often as possible which is hard since they are 4 and half hours away. Thankfully my mother is a Godsend. She does her very best to keep him happy and answers his never ending questions and continuous jokes.

It is important to live life to the fullest and keep as many memories as possible. Don’t throw away those picture albums and try to learn as much as you can about your family while you can.

Once your loved ones are gone there is no going back!

WEDNESDAY HODGE PODGE

Sleigh Bells Ring, Are Ya Hodgepodgin'

Welcome to the Wednesday Hodgepodge, Holiday Edition. Volume 106 for those of you keeping count. This will be the last Hodgepodge of 2012, but do come back in the New Year when the random fun continues (Wednesday, January 2nd).

Okay, the Hodgepodge...here are my answers~

.

1.  How will you spend 'the night before Christmas'?

This year we will be having Christmas Eve at our son’s new home. We will have the pleasure of having all of the children and grandchildren in one place. This is the first time they will all be together. I am in charge of pies for dessert and hubby will help cook the meal.

2.  What is something you are not?

I am not a big sports fan.

3.  Fudge-are you a fan?  Your favorite flavor?

Absolutely I am a fan. I love chocolate fudge however I also like maple and nutty fudges as well. It is sugar isn’t it?

4. Did you attend any craft/vendor fairs in the month of December?  Do you prefer homemade goodies or the more professional stalls?  Are you giving any homemade gifts this year?

The only fair I attended this year was at my daughter C’s work. Yes we did buy some of the treats which we ate for lunch afterwards. I am making homemade gifts for everyone. I am so glad to return to knitting and crocheting.

5. What's your favourite type of holiday gathering?

I love gathering with friends and neighbours as in our Open House as well as having family dinners. Christmas is a time to spend with friends and family before winter sets in and we cozy up in the house.

6. We're approaching a new year...what's going to be different in 2013?

2013 is going to be a n exciting year. There are more babies being born so more baby blankets will be required. One will be my new grandson in April. I also have another niece getting married. D H and I will celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary at the end of June and of course we have 3 cruises to enjoy. Not much I guess!!

7. Share a favourite scripture, quote, saying, or song lyric relating to peace.

The first song to come to mind was “Joy to the World”.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I wish to thank R’s teacher for making it possible for her family to leave S C before the storming weather hits. We pray for a safe drive for them. It will make Christmas all the more joyous. To everyone who reads this blog. Thank you for support and Have a Very Merry Christmas!

TUESDAY COFFEE CHAT

TUESDAY COFFEE CHAT

Even though there is not an official Tuesday Chat this week which is normally hosted by Rory at Time Out For Mom I want to have my say.

There has been much in the news about the shooting of the children at Sandy Hook Elementary school last Friday.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the parents and grandparents of all of the children. As well we need to give our support to the teachers and administrators who have to deal with everything.

Even though I was not personally touched it does hit close to home. My daughter wrote a piece about the shootings on her blog. Her article is here: http://www.actingbalanced.com/2012/12/an-open-response-to-tragedy.html

I also have a DIL who teaches and of course a granddaughter in kindergarten. There are also my grandchildren who are far away in the United States. I sometimes feel I am too far away to help. Our children have to be protected however can we wrap them cotton and never let them out. This was not the only tragedy where children lost their lives. A very small article appeared in our local newspaper about 10 children in Afghanistan who were killed while gathering firewood.

10 young Afghanistan girls die in explosion. An exploding bomb or landmine killed 10 young girls as they were gathering firewood outside their village in eastern Afghanistan...

There are also children at risk all over the world.

At this time of year let us all take the time to hug our children and try to keep them safe.

THRIVING THURSDAY–PONDERING WITH A PURPOSE

Pondering with a Purpose – Memories

Photobucket

Thanks to Brenda for hosting Pondering with a purpose:

This Week's prompt: Memories

Do you have any memories that would be fascinating for someone else to read about in one hundred years? or even ten?

I never thought that any one would want to hear about my boring life. I mean I got up and went to work for 23 years. Before that I stayed home with my kids while they grew up. I am not much of a cook and housework was not a strong suit either.

D H and I did start to travel which made our lives a little more exciting. We have 5 wonderful grandchildren and another on the way. All of our children completed post-secondary school and have good jobs now. Our house is paid for and in fairly good repair.

We have our health and no major issues. Soooooo would I write a memoir? I have to tell you that I am not a stranger to Memoirs as my mother has already written one. She is published and has shared the book with her family. Everyone loves to read her story. I would have to become a better writer if I were to write mine.

The whole concept of sharing our past with the future generations is wonderful. Hopefully they can learn from our mistakes.

My father has Alzheimer's, so memories are very important. Unfortunately it is the Now that he has trouble with.  I hear people talk about the pictures they take on their trips and wonder what they will do with them. I say “When you are too old to travel you travel through your pictures and keep your memories alive”. We have an office full of albums and the grandchildren love to see their parents as they grew up.

I may not write all of our memories however I have lots to share and hope to have many more along the way. If I can’t write it down I can at least share it with our family.

WEDNESDAY HODGE PODGE

And the Hodepodge,  which is always happy.  Here are this week's questions...

1.  So, when did you last take a walk in the woods? A stroll along the beach? A drive going nowhere in particular in the car?

The last time we walked to the beach was about a month ago while the weather was cooperating and the sun was shining. We love our beach front walks.

2.  Are you sending Christmas cards this year?  About how many do you send?  Photo card or something more traditional?  How do you display the cards you receive?

Yes I send Christmas cards and have had them in the mail since last week. My overseas ones were done first and had a photo of us from our summer vacation, As far as displaying our cards we have 2 card holders that I have had since I was first married 40 years ago.  They were made by our church ladies out of half a styrofoam ball and felt.  I also have a santa to hold the extras.

3. What's a word you've heard too much of in the past week?

“Oh NO!” our 20 month old daughter is learning to talk and if something isn’t right we hear “Oh NO!”

4. December 13th is National Cocoa Day-are you a fan?  Plain or flavored?  Marshmallows or no marshmallows?

I like my chocolate drink to be hot without marshmellows or whipped cream. Why mess with perfection.

5. What is something you do to help alleviate the hectic pace of the Christmas season?

I love the hectic pace however I am a big planner so I start with something to do every day.

6. Besides jewellery, what's a favourite sparkly-glittery item in your home or closet?

I have several dressed with glittery embellishments as well as some sweaters. I also have gold and silver shoes.

7. Share a favourite line or two from any Christmas carol.

O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining, / It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth. / Long lay the world in sin and error pining. / Till He appeared and the Spirit ...

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I can’t believe that I have been retired for nearly a year. This time last year I was having my retirement party and saying goodbye to lots of people I had spent the better part of 23 years with. They were like family.  I have been saying “If I had known retirement was this good, I should have done it sooner”. I have re -established my love of knitting and have many more projects for the coming year.

I have found a whole new family to connect with through blogging. It is very encouraging. D H also has to participate since he supplies me with my pictures so we have to get out and see the world. I have to be on my toes to keep up.

As everyone prepares for the holidays please be SAFE! and HEALTHY!

TUESDAY COFFE CHAT

Tuesday, Dec. 11th Topic:

Hostess with the Mostest!

With the holiday season upon us, the time for spreading cheer is here. It's more than likely that many of us will either be attending holiday parties, or hosting one ourselves. Share your tried and true holiday appetizer, your go-to festive cocktail/mocktail, the best hostess gift you gave or received....or even the worst. Let's Party!

We just had a wonderful Open House for family and friends on Sunday afternoon. It seems to be the only way we get to see people during the holidays. We stay home and they come to us. Of course there are a few expectations when our guests arrive.

The strawberry daiquiri punch which D H makes is a crowd pleaser. We used the last of the fresh strawberries from the freezer as well the Mix which we import for the US. Always on everyone’s lips is the Spinach Dip. A tried and true  crowd pleaser. There were the usual cheese and crackers, vegetables with dip and fruit with dip.

The children loved the cookies with snowman and christmas trees on them. The chocolate chews, macaroons and melt in your mouth shortbread were for the parents.

Everyone had lots to drink and the TV fireplace channel kept us cozy and warm as christmas songs were heard quietly playing in the background.

The children loved the back bedroom that was converted into a playroom. E supervised the little ones and shared the toys she considers hers. The stroller was a huge hit as well as the train and hairdressing doll. The other dollies were fed and doctored.

We were exhausted however D H wants to plan one for next year.

My Granddaughters are learning to knit!!

It is time to pass down the age old tradition of knitting. There is no better place to start than when the children are young. I picked up my needles after a hiatus of 20 years. I really thought I would never knit again because my hands got so sore. I actually gave away all of my wool stock. I kept my needles and all of my books. Thank goodness!!

This Christmas I am starting a new tradition for my grandchildren.  They will all get something made by Grammy with Love.

THRIVING THURSDAY–PONDERING WITH A PURPOSE

Photobucket

This Week's prompt: Loss

I am starting this blog a little bit later as I took my time pondering this topic. In my 61 years I have had many losses so it is difficult to pick just one. So I won’t!

I was going to start this blog with my first loss however I got to thinking about the first I was actually impacted by someone’s death. The first time was when my Aunt Marion was killed in a car accident. Aunt Marion was a favourite aunt as well as one of my mother’s best friends. Aunt Marion had been her Matron of Honour. her death sticks out because it was the first time I became aware of psychic powers that are in our family. We were shopping with my mother and we were tired however Mom would not leave the store until had a Black hat. We waited for her to find the hat and have it sized. As tired and whiny as we were Mom made us wait because she knew she would need the hat and would be in no shape to buy it. The hat was bought 3 days before we lost Aunt Marion and mother was definitely not able to make decisions.

My first real loss came when I was 18 years old. A close friend of ours, Debbie was killed in a boating accident. She was my sister P’s best friend. Debbie and my sister were swimming when a boat came too close. My sister, being the better swimmer was able to dive deeper than Debbie. Unfortunately Debbie never survived. Although her death had a terrible impact on all of us, her loss was felt worst by my sister. This loss was life changing. My sister made the decision to pursue medicine and has become an extremely successful doctor. Life at the cottage became quieter as everyone put away the power boats and got into canoes. It was also the end of our carefree summers.

The other person who was most influential in my life was my Grandmother. I was the eldest daughter of her eldest daughter. I have her name as my middle name. She was my life saviour. I don’t think I would be here today because my Mom would have killed me if not for Grandma’s influence. To put in mildly, I was a horrible teenager. Somehow Grandma could talk me down with a cup of tea and a cookie. She may have been 4 foot 11 inches but she was a strong woman. When she passed away she left me her string of pearls. I wear those pearls to every family function. She has been with me when everyone of my children have been married as well as the christenings of my grandchildren. When there is trouble Grandma will often let me know in my dreams. She somehow still keeps me focused on family and LOVE!

Over the years many wonderful people have passed through my life. Everyone has helped to set a course for me to follow. They may not be with us but they are not forgotten.

WORDLESS WEDNESDAY

Starting the decorating!

IMG_4764

WEDNESDAY HODGE PODGE

1.  Share your traditions surrounding the Christmas stocking.

We don’t have a chimney but stockings were hung by the door every year. D H never had a stocking until he married me. When the children were little the stockings were filled with books, socks and little treats. None of the items were wrapped because Santa didn’t have time. The big Santa gift was left under the stocking. The children could open their stockings before breakfast.

These days we don’t fill the stockings because our gift to each other is a cruise (which  is a little hard to pack and it is not a surprise).

2.  How many hours of sleep do you average at night?  Is it enough?

I have become a very poor sleeper because I actually do not have to get up at any particular time. I also do my best blogging in the middle of the night when D H is sleeping and not on the computer.

3.  If you had to give up one thing for the remainder of this year what would it be?

I would probably give up my telephone because most of my friends will visit and I can keep in touch by Skyping and e-mail.

4.  The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (or Wills and Kate as I like to call them) have announced they're expecting a baby. Do you follow news of the Royals?

Yes! It is hard to miss since every news cast talks about them. My grandmother was a very dedicated Royal watcher. She associated herself with the Queen Mom.

5.  For me,  the sound of childhood is__laughter especially the belly ones.

6.  Fruit cake-yay or boo? What's your favourite dessert made with fruit?

I don’t mind fruitcake although I don’t actually make it. My favourite dessert is apple pie.

7. What is one thing you want to accomplish before 2012 comes to an end?

I would like to complete all of my knitting projects before Christmas. I still have several sweaters to go.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

We have started decorating the house. I will start baking tomorrow. We will get ready for our Open House on Sunday. I expect about 60 people. It is our way of sharing with our friends and neighbours. We love to serve them our Christmas cheer.

TUESDAY COFFEE CHAT

Share your favourite holiday tradition. It can be one from your childhood, or one you started with your own family; or both!

Let me start by saying that D H and I have had 40 Christmas’s together. Over the years we have blended many traditions from both sides of our family. D H has a German background and I  am Canadian. It seems as though we changed some of the traditions over the years to fit the stages of life.

As is the German custom Christmas is celebrated on Christmas Eve. While my MIL was alive we always went to her house. I can remember big dinners with turkey and goose. There was always kinadle (Potato dumplings). We also had lots of German cookies and sweets.

Christmas Day was spent with my family. In the first few years it was a trip to the cottage for Christmas dinner. After the children came it was Breakfast at our house and the dinner at my parents. Once the family got so large my parents would go to Arizona for Christmas and each of us would have our own dinners.

  • Of course the children grew up and I went back to work so again we tweaked Christmas. I always took a week of vacation at the beginning of December to decorate and bake. We started an Open House for friends and neighbours. Being in retail I worked right up to Christmas so Christmas dinner became a Boxing Day tradition. That tradition lasted until the year of the Xs. My oldest daughter H named it because I had invited everyone of their ex-boyfriends to dinner. I have apologized for years for this dinner. How was I to know they would break up with their significant others before Christmas. I couldn’t un-invite them.

This year we will have another family Christmas as everyone will be home for Christmas. We will enjoy Christmas Eve at our son’s house. Everyone is helping with the meal. We are looking forward to watching the children’s faces as they open their gifts.

Christmas is for children and we are big kids at heart.
