SATISFACTION SATURDAY

Overall this week has been very satisfying.  The best part was our visit with my friend B.  We have been friends since Teacher’s College and have worked hard to stay in touch.  She still lives outside of the city.  Even though it was a mild winter she lives in the snow belt and had a topsy turvy winter. We are both Pisces and our birthdays are a week apart.  Of course we got together to share this milestone.

While getting together we shared our plans for the future.  We always talk about our travels so it was nice to hear B plans a trip this spring.  She is off to Ireland with a group we had  heard about but never investigated.  This got D H thinking since he is always looking for ideas.  When we visited the website he got so excited as he found a trip to Australia and New Zealand that would work for us. Now we have something more to dream about.

We also had the pleasure of our granddaughters E and F yesterday afternoon. F is afraid to go to sleep in case she misses something.  E just entertains us with her building plans.  She has her own hard hat and power tools. It was a treat to have dinner with them as well.  Thank you M and M for sharing your children with us.

I would like to finish this blog today by sharing an e-mail that B sent to us:

"Why we love children

1) NUDITY
I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the back seat, 'Mom, that lady isn't wearing a seat belt!'

2) OPINIONS
On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a note from his mother. The note read, 'The opinions expressed by this child are not necessarily those of his parents.'

3) KETCHUP
A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup out of the jar. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. 'Mommy can't come to the phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle.'

4) MORE NUDITY
A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, 'What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a little boy before?'

5) POLICE # 1
While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, 'Are you a cop? Yes,' I answered and continued writing the report. My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?' 'Yes, that's right,' I told her. 'Well, then,' she said as she extended her foot toward me, 'would you please tie my shoe?'

6) POLICE # 2
It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station.. As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and I saw a little boy staring in at me. 'Is that a dog you got back there?' he asked.
'It sure is,' I replied.
Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, 'What'd he do?'

7) ELDERLY
While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, 'The tooth fairy will never believe this!'

8) DRESS-UP
A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned, 'Daddy, you shouldn't wear that suit.'
'And why not, darling?'
'You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning.'

9) DEATH
While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased.
The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.' (I want this line used at my funeral!)

10) SCHOOL
A little girl had just finished her first week of school. 'I'm just wasting my time,' she said to her mother. 'I can't read, I can't write, and they won't let me talk!'

11) BIBLE
A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages.
'Mama, look what I found,' the boy called out.
'What have you got there, dear?'
With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered, 'I think it's Adam 's underwear!'

NOW IF THIS DIDN'T BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY, GO BACK TO BED AND FORGET IT

FIVE QUESTION FIRDAY

Once again it's time for Five Question Friday hosted by:

1. What giveaway would you like to do on your blog?

I don’t give anything away on my blogs.

2. If you had to choose between natural artistic ability and natural athletic ability, which would it be?

I would rather have natural artistic ability because I would love to have been able to visualize colour schemes and draw.

3. Do you ditch the coat the minute it becomes "spring" or are you a holdout for more cool temps?

This year I have 5 different coats on the go.  They range from my heavy winter coat which I wear walking, my driving winter coat, my fleece-lined raincoat, my unlined raincoat and my spring jacket.  There have even been days where a little sweater will do.  I believe there will still be a snowfall in our future.

4. What would you do if you won the mega millions lotto of 1/2 billion dollars?

I would share with my children; take more of my bucket list trips which include Australia, New Zealand and Japan; buy another car and fix the basement of our house

5. You are at a hotel by yourself...what do you do?

I would take a bubble bath that would last for hours; order room service and watch the televisions I want to watch

You too can be part of 5QF by linking up at fivecrookedhalos.blogspot.com

THRIVING THURSDAY

I would like to share one of my other passions with you.  You know DH and I love to travel as well as the theatre however we also love ballroom dancing.  We have been taking lessons for 11 years.  We have learned rumba, cha cha, foxtrot, waltz, quickstep, and swing. The dance we are now working on is the Argentine Tango as well as the Tango waltz and the Milonga. We prefer to spend our time dancing instead of going to a movie.  Even when our children were little our dates were to dances.  We supported most of the children’s fundraising activities by arranging dances.

We thrive on our Thursday night dance classes not only for the exercise and fun of dancing but also for the social aspect.  We have made many friends over the 11 years. Please enjoy a look at our dance lessons and what we are learning at the moment.

TRAVEL TUESDAY

Last week I mentioned that DH and I were travelling to the Mennonite community near our home for theatre, dinner and shopping.  A great time was had by all. Here are some of the sights we saw:

benj

This is an Bed & Breakfast Inn and restaurant and has been deemed historical.

IMG_0810

This is the Schoolhouse Theatre – we didn’t see our play here however we will see one later in the season.

IMG_0813

Although we couldn’t picture the real horse and buggy we did see this replica.

IMG_0815

The old ways are still available.  You can buy the brooms as well as watch demonstration of how they are made.  The shop also holds lots of antiques.

IMG_0816

Behind the barn is a stained glass studio that makes fantastic pieces of stain glass works. I would love one of their windows some day.

MEET ME ON MONDAY

Here are today's Questions:

1. What movie or movies do you have to watch when they are on TV? (submitted by @rndmcrftyGAgrl)

I don’t watch a lot of movies on TV.  I prefer to watch DVDs since I don’t have to sit through the commercials.  I love to watch baseball movies such as “Field of Dreams” or Christmas movies such as “It’s a Wonderful”.

2. When you have out of town visitors, what fun places do you take them to in your town? (Or where do you play tourist in your own town?)

I love to show our visitors our science centre, shopping malls and our parks which we have a lot.  We also have great theatre and wonderful restaurants.  No visit is complete without a trip to Niagara Falls.

3. What was the first album, CD, Download you ever bought?

My first album was Peter Noone of the Hermans Hermits.  The song I loved was “mrs Brown you’ve got a lovely daughter”.

4. Do you speak more than one language and which ones? If not, what language would you like to know?

I have a smattering of high school French and have attempted Chinese.  I will stick to my English and be respectful of people who can speak other languages.

5. What is your dream job?

Now that I am retired I think I would like be a travel agent who can take all of the trips for free.

SUNDAY IN THE CITY

This spring which has come early has had most of us looking in our gardens for the blooms that pop up through the ground.  However DH also wants to point out that we also need to look up to see the wonders of spring.  Here are some samples of the city when we look up. Look way up!!

SATISFACTION SATURDAY

As this week comes to a close I will reflect on the happenings that kept me busy.  It was definitely busy.  I reconnected with Bell employees at a Retirement Luncheon on Monday.  We were treated to lunch at the Mandarin restaurant.  The oldest member has been retired over 40 years. It was also good to meet others who are sharing their retirement plans. I have new blog readers. Welcome!

DH and I also participated in the East end meeting of retirees on Tuesday.  The meeting was a little long however I was able to visit my friends who still work in the building.  The job hasn’t changed and I can honestly say I don’t miss. Sorry guys! because they do read my blog on a regular basis.

This blog has been a great way to share what is going on with everyone and I thank all for reading about my life at this stage.  I hope I don’t bore you too much.

This was also a time to spend with my granddaughters.  We had 2 visits. On Wednesday E and F came to our house.  The weather was so good that we went to the Park.  Swinging is definitely the best part.  Higher Grammy higher was the motto.  The second was at their home so their parents could have a dinner out to celebrate their mutual birthdays.  After dinner it was a visit to their park where swinging was the option.

DH and I thought we could tire E and F out however this scheme backfired as it was Grammy and Grampy who were exhausted. Hopefully the girls will let their parents have a full nights sleep to make up for it.

Of course Dh and I took full advantage of the wonderful spring weather.  DH has some wonderful pictures to share on the blog in the future.  We have been walking around our city parks and observing the renewal of life.  We live in an amazing world.  I hope every one can take a few minutes of their day to appreciate the beauty around us.  Being retired has opened our eyes.

I had a satisfactory week.  I hope yours was too.

FIVE QUESTION FRIDAY

It's that time again when I answer five questions about myself... posed by:

1. If you were free to just hop in the car and drive, where would you go? Or, if you could hop a plane and go anywhere, where?

I love to drive and dislike flying.  Since we are retired we can take the time to travel all over the place.  Our next big drive besides visiting H is to Boston.

2. What's your most recently read favourite book?

I am terrible with names of books as I just pick them up and read them however one I shared was about “Friendship Bread”

3. What's your favourite Spring Break memory?

Oh my goodness! it has been so long since I had a spring break however just enjoying this year’s weather has been amazing.

4. What do you put in your child's Easter basket? Or, for those w/o kids, what was put in your childhood basket?

When I was a child Easter was a day to go to Church.  My mother usually made my sister and I a new Spring outfit.  We always had a new Easter bonnet.

I 5. Do you get a summer haircut?

When I started to plan my retirement one of the plans was for my hair.  I now have a wash and go which needs to be cut every 6 weeks.  This has upset my hairdresser who gave me the cut because for 37 years I used to go every week for a blow dry and curl. So my cut is winter, summer, spring and fall.

THRIVING THURSDAY

This beautiful weather we have been experiencing has put me in the mood for summer.  I can hardly wait.  Although winter was not as long as it should have been it made entering retirement easy.  All of our dreams come from thinking ahead.  Who knew that 23 years ago I would be able to consider getting paid for not working. This month I actually get a raise in pay as another retirement planned payment kicks in.

I think that all of the planning and forethought we have done has made the transition for working to not working very easy.  Anyone who thinks they can stop work one day and be retired the next will face some serious difficulties.  It isn’t just a matter of being able to sleep (which is great) or miss those traffic headaches (okay maybe) but having a plan to use your time wisely.

So how am I filling my time?  Well it is a fantastic time to meet up and talk to friends who have retired before me.  They have been able to show me some of their pitfalls and share their new visions with me.  Of course with Dh already being retired has helped as well.

I have joined several retirement groups.  They met this week and we shared lunch and jokes.  It was good fun. I also had time to enjoy my granddaughters who keep us young.  I am impressed with their insights into day to day living.  Of course they are also a little closer to the ground but their sight is 20/20.  We will have another opportunity on Friday night so that my son and daughter-in-law can enjoy their birthday dinner in peace.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY M.  IT WAS A GREAT DAY WHEN YOU CAME INTO OUR LIVES!!

It has been great enjoying the record-breaking weather these past few days.  The pictures will remind us of the good days when the cool and wet weather returns this weekend.

TRAVEL TUESDAY

Even though we are not taking any big trips until our cruise in the summer we do like to jaunt around our home area.  This weekend  we are off to a quaint Mennonite community for theatre and visiting with our friends.

We have been taking in the activities in this town for many years.  Since it is close to home we can make a day trip.  We meet up with our friends for lunch, share a show and then follow-up with a nice dinner.

The town has a farmer’s market, an outlet mall and a cozy main street. We are served by the Mennonite people and share the road with their horse and buggies.  It takes us back to a time when life wasn’t so hectic.  We can slow down and enjoy.

I will share some pictures on my Sunday in the City blog. So until then have a great day.

MEET ME ON MONDAY

Here are today’s questions.  This blog is hosted by Acting Balanced.

1. How do you like your eggs?

Unfortunately I have an intolerance to eggs so I don’t eat them at all.

2. Who is the last person you spoke to on the phone?

My Mother.  I call her at 6pm every day to check with her and my Dad.  Today was not one of their best days.

3. Do you have a place you keep 'junk' in your home?

Yes in the basement.  We have way to much junk.

4. What is on your 'spring cleaning' list?

Not much since my DH does most of the cleaning.  With just the 2 of us we try to keep things tidy everyday.

5. What blog post have you written recently that you'd like more people to know about? (don't forget to link it up)

Since I have just started posting a blog I wish people would comment on my blogs to let me know if I am getting it right.

SATISFACTION SATURDAY

The end of the week has finally arrived.  This week was a little slower than last week.  It was March break for the school children.  Traffic was lighter and the weather is fantastic.  DH and I have managed to walk every day.  We only drove the car to go dancing and to pickup the ladder from our daughter C. Good thing because the price of gas is $1.28 a litre.

Next week will be busier but I’ll tell about it next week.  We got good news on the cruise we booked for next February.  Our travel agent got us some extras like a dinner at the expensive restaurant, a cabin credit and free drinks.  She also saved another $400 off the price we were quoted on the ship.

We also planning the trips we want to take on the cruise this summer.  Most of the time we will be docked and walk off the ship.  Public transit is wonderful in Europe.  Most cities offer a Hop-on-Hop off bus.  We used this mode of transportation when we were in Sweden and it was very worthwhile.  We actually travelled the full length and studied the places we wanted to get off then went back to see them.

I am also back to crocheting my baby blankets.  We haven’t heard of as many babies this year but I will be ready anyway.  We are now celebrating all of the first birthdays from last years crop.

DH has been in the garden and has uncovered some growth.  Please check Sunday in the City to see what he has found.

I hope your week was as satisfying as mine.  Enjoy this weather everyone.

FIVE QUESTIONS FRIDAY

Once again, I am sharing a little bit about myself with questions posted by:

1. Will you run to the store or to pick up a kid looking a mess?

Not any more.  Since being retired we walk every where and when my grandchildren are dirty they can wait for their bath time which includes bubbles at Grammy’s

2. Do you finish a book if it's boring or you don't like it?

No time is too precious to waste on a boring book. I have always read for pleasure.  I found an excellent book on board the ship’s library which surprised me.

3. Beach or mountain vacations?

I am not a beach person because I burn very easily however I will cruise anywhere and plan to see the fjords of Norway in the summer.

4. What thing/event says "winter will end and spring is right around the corner" to you?

Easter has always been a favourite holiday for me so the arrival of the bunny is a good sign.  I also have 2 children and 3 grandchildren with spring birthdays which is also a cause for celebration.

5. Would you prefer couples or family vacation?

Our vacations are taken as a couple and we visit our family so both are the way to go.  It would be wonderful if our whole family could take a cruise with us someday.

THRIVING THURSDAY

I was out walking with my Grandson. He picked up something off of the ground and started to put it in his mouth.

I took the item away from him and I asked him not to do that.

"Why" my Grandson asked.

"Because it's been on the ground; you don't know where it's been, it's dirty, and probably has germs," I replied.

At this point, my Grandson looked at me with total admiration and asked, "Grandma, how do you know all this stuff?? You are so smart."

I was thinking quickly and said to him, "all Grandmas know stuff. It's on the Grandma Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Grandma."

We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but he was evidently pondering this new information.

"Oh....I get it"! he beamed, "so if you don't pass the test, you have to be the Grandpa". 'Exactly,' I replied with a big smile on my face.

This joke was sent to me by my mother.  One of the best parts of being retired is having the opportunity to spend time with our grandchildren.  Not bragging much, we have 5 awesome grandchildren.

Our oldest granddaughter R is turning 14.  She is also graduating from grade 8.  We will have the privilege of witnessing this milestone in May. Her brother L is 5 and is an expert at “Angry Birds”. Her youngest brother E is leaving the baby stage and wants so badly to grow up.  He no longer wants to sleep in his crib or eat in his high chair.  He can’t learn new things fast enough.

Our other grandchildren are closer to home.  E has just turned 4.  She celebrated her birthday last weekend.  Her best gifts were a scooter from her parents and pizza playdoh from her Aunt C and Uncle P.  Our youngest granddaughter F has a milestone of her own as turns 1 at the end of the month.  She has the wonderful job of exploring the whole world.

Life is too short to ignore the blessing that children bring and the best part of having children is when they can give you grandchildren. Thank you H & W, M & M.  C & P we have much to look forward to.

TRAVEL TUESDAY

Even though we are home I would like to share some more memories from our cruise.  Today I would like to show the pictures from Falmouth Jamaica.  We didn’t actually take a tour however we did step out into the port area.

It was just wonderful to enjoy the sunshine.

MEET ME ON MONDAY

1. What are your plans for St. Patrick's Day?

We haven’t made any plans.  When I was working we usually wore green to work and I have some 4 leaf clover earrings.

2. What is your favourite room in your house?

My living room.  We have our TV and I keep my crocheting and knitting beside my reclining chair.

3. What 'gadget' do you have that you can't live without?

I am not really a gadget person.

4. What will your first thought be when you learn that you won a lottery?

Where is the next cruise ship leaving from and can I live on one ship.

5. Other than Acting Balanced and your own, what is your favourite blog to read?

The only other blog I currently read on a regular basis would be Touristic.  I am a late bloomer to blogging however I am following a few others that Heather has introduced me to.

FIVE QUESTION FRIDAY

It's that time of the week again - when I answer five fabulous questions posed as part of:

1. Are you looking forward to the time change this weekend?

Not really however I do appreciate the lighter sky in the evening and since I no longer drive to and from work it doesn’t really matter.

2. Are you getting the new iPad/would you want a iPad?

I am really a techno nerd.  My kids want me to give up books and at least try a kindle or e-reader but I see no need for an I-pad.

3. If money was not a problem, what is the one thing you would splurge on?

I would live on a cruise ship and travel to Australia.

4. How did you and the Mr. (or Mrs.) meet?

We met in high school and my  Mother introduced us.  I was failing math and he became my tutor however I dumped him and the second time we met at a Scout function and I thought he changed.

5. Summer is right around the corner. Bikini or one-piece?

A one piece – I never could wear a bikini.  I also like to swim and a one piece never gets lost.

Thanks to Mama M for the questions again this week...
If you like this style of meme, you can also check out the one I host now - Meet Me on Monday!

THRIVING THURSDAY

We have made it home.  We have mixed feelings about coming home.  We had a wonderful time away.  Our visit with H, W, R, L and E was fantastic.  The idea of returning to their home after the cruise was one of the wisest decisions we have made.  By staying the extra day we were able to drive home in excellent weather conditions.  We arrived home to 67 degrees which tied a 20 year old record.

We unpacked the 7 suitcases and I now have loads of laundry.  Of course some of the clothes probably won’t be worn for another 3 months when summer arrives.  The house was welcoming.  Our neighbour D took fabulous care.  The plants are thriving as well.  Our mail was sorted so I could open the important mail first.

We have several invitations to follow up on.  March was busy last year with the arrival of lots of babies so they are celebrating their first birthdays.  I should have done more shopping at Carter’s yesterday as it was Grandparent Day and I got an extra 10% off.  Oh well hindsight is 20/20 and it is too far to go back.

D H is getting organized so that he can do the taxes.  All of the paperwork is in.  He also had some other computer work to do.  We are also glad to be able to watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy again.

We are also planning our next trip back to the States in May.  Just a short jaunt and not the major trip in the summer which is on the count-down clock.  We have learned some packing lessons for that cruise. Fortunately we have enough clothes that we could probably repack right now.

We will get back into the swing of things at home.  We have a lot of catching up to do We thrive on each new challenge and adventure..

I never talked about the wonderful food on our cruise however this was D H’s salad. They told us there were no calories when eat food on a ship!!!

TRAVEL TUESDAY

I am writing this from shore as we have left the cruise ship.  We are heading home however we extended our trip by returning to H’s house for free bed and breakfast.  H also update my blog so you will see a few changes.  Feel free to wonder to the other blogs that I also follow. You will also notice the countdown clock as we plan our next cruise in July.

I know you maybe tired of hearing about our wonderful cruise and especially of the pictures D H took for me however I must show a few more people who made the trip so memorable.

MEET ME ON MONDAY

Based on the original Meet Me on Monday hosted by Java at Never Growing Old, I'll 5 questions on Sunday evening along with a linky for you to link up your post answers! If you have suggestions for next week's questions please feel free to leave a comment or shoot me a message on twitter or on the Acting Balanced Facebook Page

Here are today's Questions:

1. What is on your bedside table?

My bedside table is my cedar chest so it has pictures of my kids when they were young, my clock (no longer need the alarm portion) and a few books

2. Hardback, Paperback or E-Reader?

Sorry I am still a book person even though the kids want me on an E-reader and  paperback for the ease of carrying a book wherever I go

3. What is your 'go to' drink of choice?

Tea made the right way with the tea bag in first then hot water.  I am a tea perfectionist.

4. How do you like to spend your birthday?

With family however on a cruise is a new venue for me which I thoroughly enjoyed as you know.
5. Finish this sentence - I would never be caught dead in ...

a mini-skirt and a crop top since in my old age no one wants to flab

Answer them on your blog and link up - or answer them in the comment section below -

Sorry I am late with this blog.  We were in transit yesterday.  It is also a big blog so I needed better bandwidth than I got on the ship.

I would like to show you the wonderful staff of the MS Ryndam:

There are more to come however I will save the rest for another blog since this a trip that will stay with us for a very long time.
